The 5 Different Types Of Vape Mods
Without further ado, here’s the list of different types of vape mods, with some key advantages and disadvantages for each:
1. Vape Pen
A vape pen or vaporizer pen is a small pen-like device that is cheap, reliable, and easy to use.
Most people will start their vaping venture using a vape pen. This is because of how little vaping knowledge is required to use one. Most vape pens come with an internal battery and little to no settings.
This is perfect for new vapers who want a no-fuss solution for their habit.
E-cigarettes like vape pens have been proven to be a useful tool in helping smokers quit cigarettes. This is because the look and feel of a vape pen are very similar to your average cigarette.
Another positive aspect of vape pens is how lightweight and compact they are. This makes it easy to carry around in your pocket. Just make sure to turn your device off when not in use.
Vape pens have come a long way since their creation in the early 2000s. In the beginning, manufacturers designed vape pens to look very similar to a cigarette. Nowadays though, there are lots of different types of vape pens including ones that look more like a thin box mod.
The term ‘stick’ is more commonly used when describing a vape pen as of late.
- Easy to Use
- Perfect for Beginners
- Lack of Power
- Breaks Easily
- Less Flavor & Clouds
2. Pod System
The pod system or pod mod is a relatively new addition to the vaping market.
The first rendition being released in 2017 in the form of the very popular JUUL starter kit.
These types of devices are small in size and offer even more ease of use than most vape pens. Pod systems usually come self-contained. This means the battery, eliquid, and coil are already installed.
Many pod systems don’t even have a firing button, they simply start working when you inhale. This type of device is largely used by beginner vapers, but advanced users have been known to take advantage of the intense throat hit pod devices can provide.
As you could imagine, pod systems are ultra-portable because of their size and weight.
The addition of disposable varieties that can be stocked at gas stations gives the pod system an even wider audience reach compared to most other devices on this list.
Utilizing the pod system, many manufacturers are using them as a gateway product to larger and more expensive devices.
- Great Value
- Still Easy for Beginners
- More Power Than A Vape Pen
- Average Flavor & Clouds
- Low Flexibility/Customization
3. Box Mod
Box mods are bigger and more powerful than vape pens or pod systems.
They are also heavier because of the removable batteries they house.
Most box mods can take one, two, or three lithium battery varieties. The type of batteries you can use include 18650, 20700, 21700, and 26650. Make sure to check your instruction manual to see what battery your mod can take.
The advantages of using a box mod are that they are very customizable. All box mods come with a universal 510 threaded connection, which allows you to swap out your tank.
Good box mods have multiple safety functions installed. Some even come with a chipset offering even more features and settings.
Box mods usually have an OLED digital display that will display your wattage, volts, and ohms.
- High Power
- Great Flavor/Clouds
- Ability to Customize Setup
- More Expensive
- Heavy & Bulky
- Not for Beginners
4. Squonk Mod
Squonk mods are a variation of the box mod.
It will have a built-in squeeze bottle that is used to feed eliquid from within your device up through the 510 connection, to your atomizer.
Most squonkers tend to use an RDA as their choice of atomizer, as it removes the need to frequently drip through the mouthpiece.
Squonk mods tend to attract the mid to advanced-level vaper.
- Great All-Around Everyday Vape
- Long Battery Life
- Not Suitable for Beginners
5. Mechanical Mod
Mech mods are not for beginner vapers.
They are considered unregulated devices.
To use a mech mod you will need a sound knowledge of Ohm’s law. They can be similar in size to a box mod or vape pen, but don’t have any of the safety features or fail-safes.
The batteries in a mech mod send a current directly into your coil when the firing button is pressed. The power is reliant on the type of battery you are using and how much charge it has.
Mech mods have been popularized by Instagram vape trick videos. More commonly used are mech tube mods which feature a bottom-firing button. They are reliable, durable, and easy to fix.
Because mech mods have minimal hardware and circuitry, they can be relatively light and easy to carry around.
